Confined Space VOC

There can be many hazards facing workers entering a confined space, including Confined Space VOCs. Dangerous concentrations of VOCs can build up in confined spaces and present the risk of asphyxiation or flammability. Detecting the concentration of VOCs before entering a confined space is an important step in ensuring worker safety. Confined Space VOC concentrations can be determined using a hand held VOC detector to ensure that hazardous levels are not present before entry.

What instruments can be used to detect confined space VOCs?
The Photovac 2020ComboPRO PID is ideal for use for this application. This handheld photoionization detector has built in alarms that alert the user of dangerous concentrations of confined space VOCs. Additionally, the DataFID utilizes flame ionization technology, and therefore can detect a wider range of VOCs, including methane.

What are important characteristics to consider about an instrument being used to detect Confined Space VOCs?
For an instrument to be effective as a confined space gas monitor, it should be small, compact and easy to use. Hand held instruments are the most convenient to operate in a confined space situation. An instrument needs to provide rapid response, to alert the user in time about potential dangers. Also, a confined space gas monitor should be intrinsically safe to operate in a hazardous situation, in case high levels of confined space VOCs are present.

When should a flame ionization detector be used to detect confined space VOCs?
An FID should be used when the compounds that are potentially present are not detectable by a PID. In petroleum confined space situations, an FID will respond best to the Aromatics, Alkenes and Alkanes that may be present. An FID also measures methane, a major component in natural gas.

How long will the unit work on a full battery charge as a portable unit?
The 2020ComboPRO will operate for approximately 8 hours on a fully charged battery. The DataFID's long life battery enables it to operate for 15 hours on a single charge.

How reliable are the instruments?
If the instruments are properly maintained they are vary reliable and accurate.
